According to the recently published 2015 Institutional Real Estate Allocations Monitor, jointly published by Hodes Weill and Cornell University’s Baker Program in Real Estate, institutions are on average approximately 1% below their target allocation for real estate. The under-allocation is nowhere more pronounced than in China, where the vast majority of institutional assets take the form of fixed income investments. Chinese institutions are deeply underweight in real estate compared to their global peers, with insurance companies having only an estimated a 1-2% holding versus their North American and European counterparts who are on average 7.8% and 8.6% invested in real estate, respectively.
